How to write a concise research introduction

A strong research introduction is not a compressed CV. It is a short explanation of the problem you study, the evidence that you can work on it, why the recipient is relevant, and what you want to happen next.

Start with the recipient's decision

Before writing, identify the decision the recipient must make. A potential supervisor may decide whether your interests fit their group. A collaborator may decide whether your skills complement an unfinished project. A mentor may decide whether they can answer a technical question. When the desired decision is unclear, the message usually becomes a list of qualifications rather than a useful introduction.

Use four pieces of information

A concise introduction normally needs four parts. First, identify your current stage and field. Second, describe one specific research problem rather than several broad interests. Third, provide one or two pieces of evidence, such as a thesis topic, publication, dataset, experiment, or technical skill. Fourth, state one clear request. Each part should earn its place by helping the recipient understand relevance.

Replace broad claims with precise evidence

Phrases such as “I am passionate about AI” or “your research is very interesting” do not help a recipient judge fit. Replace them with a concrete connection. For example: “My master's work evaluated lightweight convolutional models for four-class brain-tumor MRI classification, and I am interested in your group's work on clinically reliable model evaluation.” The second sentence gives the recipient a field, task, evidence, and reason for contact.

Keep the unpublished idea proportional

An initial introduction should not contain every technical detail. Describe the research problem, the proposed direction, and the part where the recipient's expertise matters. Avoid pasting a complete literature review. A focused paragraph makes it easier for the recipient to decide whether a longer discussion is worthwhile.

Make the request easy to answer

End with a request that can be answered in one sentence. Examples include asking whether the topic could fit a PhD group, whether the person is open to a short meeting, or whether they would review a one-paragraph concept. Avoid several unrelated requests in one note.

A practical structure

Use this order: current position and field; one relevant achievement; connection to the recipient's work; proposed direction; specific request. Read the final version aloud. Remove any sentence that repeats your CV, flatters without evidence, or introduces a second topic. A two-minute message is more likely to be understood than a five-minute biography.

Before sending

Verify the recipient's name and current affiliation. Check that every public profile link opens correctly. Keep your own copy because a temporary note is not an archival system. Adapt the introduction to the channel

Email, LinkedIn, and a temporary note do not need identical wording. Email needs a useful subject line and enough context to make the link trustworthy.
